Beyond the Point
By Kendrick Howard — Letters from Xhale
Words that breathe. Stories that linger.
Collection: Quarreling Reasons That Captivate Minds
I wrote ‘Beyond the Point’ in a season of learning to stop measuring my life against what I could not reach. This poem is about accepting the wings God gave you — not smaller wings, not lesser wings, just yours. It is about gratitude for the sky you have today, and the people who remind you that you are already enough.
I have always tried
to be more than myself,
to reach beyond the person
I was yesterday,
to chase the height
of every dream
I carried in my chest.
I thought wanting more
was the greatest education—
to aspire,
to reach,
to become
something greater
than what I could see.
But I have learned
there is a point
I cannot cross.
A place in life
I am meant to reach,
and a place
I am meant to remain.
I can dream beyond it.
I can wonder beyond it.
I can look toward the sky
and imagine
how high I might fly.
But I am still here.
Still me.
Still breathing.
Still becoming.
Still the person
God intended me to be.
There is no negotiation
with the wings I was given.
No bargaining
with the height of my flight.
No shame
in the distance
another person may travel.
My wings are mine.

We spend so much of life trying to cross a line that was never ours to cross. This poem is permission to stop. To breathe. To be grateful for today’s bread — not tomorrow’s. Beyond the point, but never beyond God.
